The portraits are part of a larger body of work that explores contemporary social culture within the context of web-based social networking sites. The head shot is a fundamental component of these sites and is therefore often highly constructed and refined. These paintings address the function of the portrait as an integral component when constructing one's material and social identity.

By painting the subjects from the shoulders up, I am acknowledging the tradition of the bust portrait in painting as well as the head-shot or mug-shot in contemporary photography. The subjects are quickly photographed and given only seconds to prepare. As a result there is a natural and impromptu appearance. As digital technology makes it easier to delete or adjust an image, the tradition of casual photography is being usurped by the urge to obtain more manipulated and refined images.
